How To Survive The Lockdown

How's it going? Hope you and your family are managing to stay virus-free and healthy?

I've been thinking about a few things we could do while we're experiencing this lockdown, to keep our minds and bodies together. For us mountain bikers, being told to stay at home is the worst news ever - we're outdoor people and love nothing better than escaping urban areas to ride our bikes.

So, I'll be sharing a few ideas for stuff you can do while spending this time at home. Feel free to chip in and add any more on any of our social media channels.

Quick Fitness Routine
I've been doing this little routine, every other day. It only takes around 10-15 minutes and you feel great after completing it. If you can get outside at all use it as a good warm-up before a ride or a run:
  • 3 x 8 goblet squats (use a dumbbell or a kettle bell for added resistance if you have any)
  • 3 x 16 press-ups
  • 3 x 8 (per leg) lunges (use weights if you have them)
  • 3 x 8 standing leg raises (use weights if you have them)
  • 3 x 8 (per leg) calf raises (use your stairs to get more heel drop)
  • 1 x 1 minute plank
Most of this isn't my routine, it's adapted from a routine called 'The Minimalist's Strength Workout' by a performance coach called Brad Stulberg. You can see how the exercises are performed in video format over at Outside Online here.

Brad writes a great column for Outside Online; lots of articles about fitness for both mind and body. Check out his work here.

The most important thing is that you do something while this crazy period in our lives is going on. As mountain bikers, we know that exercise is good for our minds as well as our bodies. Plus, you want to keep a decent level of fitness ready for when it's time to hit the trails, right?!

Keep an eye out for more ideas for what you can do at home. I'll try and do one a week.

Feel free to email me at: tomredfern@brokenriders.com with your own ideas and any feedback. Would be great to hear what you're up to!

All the best,
Tom
